Epic Games are currently working on Fortnite and Paragon, both of which are built around online multiplayer, but of course the studio has made story-driven single-player titles in the past, with Gears of War being a notable example.
If you're among those hoping for the studio to return to those roots, you may well be disappointed to hear that spiralling production costs and an "indie" mentality among staff could conspire to ensure that Epic never again makes a single-player focused title.
"The economics of those games forces developers to work with major publishers to succeed, and that seems to be irreversible," CEO Tim Sweeney told Polygon.
"We realized that the business really needed to change its approach quite significantly. We were seeing some of the best games in the industry being built and operated as live games over time rather than big retail releases.
"We recognized that the ideal role for Epic in the industry is to drive that," Sweeney added, "and so we began the transition of being a fairly narrow console developer focused on Xbox to being a multi-platform game developer and self publisher, and indie on a larger scale."
This certainly sounds like the company will continue to shift towards community-driven online games. We recently played their latest offering, Paragon, and you can read our thoughts on their progress by hitting this link.
