Overwatch's open beta has already started for those who pre-ordered the game, starting tomorrow for everyone else, and many of you are probably very excited to test Blizzard's first new IP in 18 years. Unfortunately you won't get the chance to test out every mode.

Jeff Kaplan, the game's director, took to Battle.net to announce that the newly introduced Competitive Play mode won't be part of the open beta, nor the game's launch.

Competitive Play is a tier-based mode where players fight against each other in month-long seasons, much like Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm. A mode like this requires much balancing, which may be part of the reason why Kaplan says they need time to rework the system after feedback from the closed beta. These changes will take some time to implement and polish, so the mode will be available again "sometime after Overwatch launches".

When might that be, we hear you ask? Overwatch will launch on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One May 24.
