Square Enix has cancelled the PC-based Legacy of Kain spin-off in development at Psyonix, Nosgoth. The asymmetrical multiplayer title had been in Early Access on Steam for several months, although during that time it had failed to attract a large enough audience.

"This was not an easy decision to come to," Square Enix said. "It has been a pleasure to build this game with your help, but ultimately its audience hasn't grown enough to sustain ongoing operations."

Servers will go offline on May 31, and as is the norm, real money transactions have been taken offline. Any recent purchases (since March 1) will be reimbursed.

We chatted to the developers less than a month ago, and a full release seemed imminent. Obviously since then a decision was made further up the chain to cancel the title.

"Any future Legacy of Kain project will be considered independently of Nosgoth and on the merits of the proposals alone," Square Enix said of the franchise.
