It didn't take long from Harmonix announcing their Fig campaign to bring Rock Band 4 to PC before we understood that it probably would fail. They asked for $1,500,000, but funding didn't exactly rock and roll in. Three days ago we wrote about the fact that it had barely reached the halfway point with two days to go, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that it failed.
The campaign didn't even reach the $800,000 mark. In a message on its Fig site Harmonix says that they're obviously disappointed, and that they'd been looking forward to working on Rock Band 4 and Rock Band Network again.
The campaign did attract quite a lot of investors, and perhaps Harmonix's biggest mistake here was to quote the actual costs of what developing Rock Band 4 on PC with the Rock Band Network and Steam Workshop support amount to. Game development isn't cheap, even if it's simply a matter of porting an existing game.
All hope for Rock Band 4 is not out though, as Harmonix aren't ruling out that it gets made at some point.
"It's certainly in the realm of possibility that we might try again in the future, or find another path to get Rock Band for PC made. We love the PC as a platform, and we're excited by the possibilities and freedom it allows for User Generated Content, but right now we don't have any specific plans to make it happen."
