Much has been made of the room scale VR offered by the HTC Vive, the Valve-backed virtual reality headset, but it seems as though it's a trick that can also be pulled off by chief rival in the PC space, the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift.
Vive uses Lighthouse technology to map a player's movements around a predefined space, with said movements then translated into the game space. Now it sounds like the Oculus Rift will offer similar functionality, as detailed by head of worldwide studios Jason Rubin, who promises that it will be demonstrated by the company at some point in the future.
"Some people will really want room scale," Rubin told Polygon. "It's definitely cool. We have the tech ability to provide room scale. Our tech doesn't preclude that. At some point we'll demo that."
"We don't believe that the consumer has the space in general," Rubin added by way of explanation of why it's not a priority for the company.
Oculus Rift is launching next week, with Vive set to follow the week after.
