THQ have decided to cancel the proposed video game trilogy Insane, a collaboration with famed director Guillermo del Toro, attached to Volition and announced back at the Spike TV Video Game Awards in 2010. Jason Rubin was the bringer of bad news.

"We have decided not to pursue further pre-production on Insane, and have returned all of our IP rights to Guillermo del Toro. By cancelling these explorations outside of our core business, we feel we can improve focus on our core game portfolio, which remains unchanged."

In other Volition news, THQ did confirm that the proposed expansion for Saints Row: The Third has been cancelled in favour of bringing out a full on sequel in the series next year.

THQ lost a cool $23.2 million during the last quarter, which was an improvement on last year ($64.4 million) and overall better than expected. Catalogue sales and the sale of the UFC license to EA helped the result.

Having shed Insane, Devil's Third, and the UFC license, a new slimmer THQ is banking on Company of Heroes 2, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Metro: Last Light, WWE '13, Darksiders II, and eventually Saints Row 4 to turn their fortunes around.
