It's great news for an indie studio to hear that its game has been enjoyed by nearly 2 million people, although perhaps not if the vast majority of those people have gotten hold of the game illegally.

This is the situation faced by the developers of Punch Club, Lazy Bear Games, which according to Alex Nichiporchik from publisher Tiny Build, has sold a respectable 300k copies via Steam since its launch last year.

However, although the game has been relatively successful for studio and publisher, it could have done so much more, with more than 1.6 million copies of the title being downloaded via torrent sites the world over.

There's a fulsome blogpost that goes into lots of detail regarding the locations and timings of the illegal downloads, but the bottom line is a huge number of people have pirated the game (almost twice as many on PC as on mobile). With indie developers relying on the money generated from sales, no matter how you look at it, this kind of rampant piracy is a problem.
