There's often a lot of complaints about microtransactions, and many people tend to see it as a bonus when they're missing from new games. But in the end, it seems like it has been widely accepted by the gaming community, and EA reports that in the Ultimate Team mode alone (FIFA, Madden, NHL), they have earned around $650 million from them.
If you include all digital extras as well (besides microtransactions, so season passes, expansions, DLC and so on) the number doubles to $1.3 billion. Basically, don't expect DLC and microtransactions to go anywhere. They have become incredibly good business and an important income stream for the video game business.
