Chess for a "modern age"? Yikes

Do you miss the classic game Battle Chess? Or was chess never the same after your guild raids to Kharazan in World of Warcraft? Never fear, because Southpeak have just announced that they will be publishing Gaijin Entertainment's Battle vs Chess on consoles, PC, Mac and handhelds this fall.

The game "aims to bring the classic tabletop game into the modern age, without removing the essential qualities that have made it popular for centuries", which not only means that it will feature fancy animated pieces; it will also feature an "action mode", where "players challenge their opponent in a beat-‘em-up style encounter. Using a variety of weapons, fighting techniques and combos, players must best their opponent in a fast-paced flurry of blows and special moves -adding a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘checkmate'."

Yes, that "checkmate" thing obviously came from a press release. I might include a lot of bad humour when I write up news here at Gamereactor, but I'm not that cheesy.

Anyway, here's a couple of screenshots.
