The next Assassin's Creed won't be set in Spain

Aim to return the franchise to more "regular" releases, but not necessarily yearly.

As we told you last week, Assassin's Creed is going to skip 2016, with the next core entry in the series now planned to hit at some point in 2017.

The reason behind the decision was to give their studios the extra time to "evolve the game mechanics", and breathe new life into the franchise.

Speaking during an investors call Ubisoft chief Yves Guillemot has been elaborating on the decision to step back from the yearly release schedule, revealing that when the series does make a comeback, they're aiming for "regular" releases, and not necessarily a return to the yearly cycle.

"The goal is not automatically to come back on annual cycle but to come on a regular basis," Guillemot explained. "We saw it was time to give it lots of time so [developers] could really work on the property and all the mechanics to make sure we could take [the series] to another level."

He then added: "What we are seeing today is promising. We will be able to come on a regular basis, [but] we can't say every year."

The publisher has also confirmed that the next entry in the series won't be set in Spain, which is the setting for the upcoming movie starring Michael Fassbender.

"The next Assassin's Creed won't be about the Inquisition," chief financial officer Alain Martinez said. "That doesn't mean there will never be an Assassin's Creed about the Inquisition, but we do feel it was wiser to give the creative freedom on the movie, so therefore there is not a great immediate tie-in between movie and games."
