The PlayStation 4 is selling a lot better than Xbox One, in fact it is outselling it with a ratio of 2:1 worldwide. This doesn't mean there's no money to be made from Microsoft's console however, in fact it's quite the opposite. Ubisoft reports that an Xbox One gamer is worth more than a PlayStation 4 player in terms of their buying power.
For every $1 a PS4 owner spends on Ubisoft's products, the average Xbox One gamer spent $1.25. Therefore there is quite a lot higher average revenue per player (ARPU) on Microsoft's console. Because of this, Ubisoft got 41% of the last quarter sales from PlayStation 4 products and 27% from Xbox One - numbers that aren't reflected in overall console sales (though there's still a difference).
These numbers are of course only valid for Ubisoft, but there is reason to think it might be similar for others as well given that Ubisoft offer a bunch of big games and have had various exclusivity deals with both platform holders.
This is naturally important for Microsoft to point to as they are facing an uphill struggle to compete with Sony this generation in terms of third-party support.
