News regarding the long-term future of Destiny has been somewhat thin on the ground of late, but today we did get a little bit of information from Activision about their plans for Bungie's shooter in the months and years ahead.

As part of their latest financial report, the publisher confirmed that they're planning on releasing an expansion for Destiny in 2016, and a full sequel to the game the year after.

In the post they said: "Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017."

A large new expansion could mean anything. There were two - House of Wolves and The Dark Below - during the first year, but neither were particularly huge. Alternatively it could be something similar in scope to The Taken King, which was altogether more substantial.

On the subject of The Taken King, it seems like the expansion has done good business for Activision and Bungie, with "record digital attach rates." The publisher also boasted that more than 25 million registered users have spent nearly 3 billion hours playing Destiny.
