Ubisoft has just confirmed that this year there'll be no main Assassin's Creed game released. The publisher has said that they're going to be "re-examining" the franchise, giving themselves the time they need to "evolve the game mechanics."

The news comes ahead of the company's next financial call. Here's the official statement from Ubisoft:

"This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin's Creed franchise. As a result, we've decided that there will not be a new Assassin's Creed game in 2016. Since the release of Assassin's Creed Unity, we've learned a lot based on your feedback. We've also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin's Creed a premier open-world franchise. We're taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we're delivering on the promise of Assassin's Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone's playground. We'll have more to share on all of the above soon."

Last month it was rumoured that the series would be skipping 2016 (more on that here), with the next game apparently set in Egypt. There's no confirmation on the setting, but it's now clear that the reports surrounding the move into 2017 were correct.

Of course, there is going to be a movie released at the end of 2016, so we're still going to have some Templar vs. Assassins action to look forward to this year.

Last year's Assassin's Creed: Syndicate will be the last core AC game until 2017.
