Arktos Entertainment and Hammerpoint Interactive have today revealed details of their debut game, The War Z.

The title is to be a survival-horror themed MMO, and is to be set in post-apocalyptic world riddled with the undead. The game is expected to be released in Q3 of this year.

"The whole team is completely obsessed with the zombie culture as well as with post-apocalyptic games like Fallout," said Eric Nordin, senior game designer for The War Z.

"Since we started the design of the game, we have continued to incorporate new features that inspire us as we go. At the end of the day we want to ship a game that we want to play ourselves and we're hoping that other gamers will recognize our passion and be excited about playing as well!"

Obvious parallels can be made to Arma 2 mod, Day Z. Both games feature zombies, permadeath and a hunger mechanic. The War Z will offer gamers a choice between first and third person perspectives, and apparently there won't be a subscription required to play.

In an interview with IGN, Arktos CEO Sergey Titov explained: "We began developing our game before DayZ, we've been encouraged by fact that DayZ has become so popular. And yes, of course some of our latest design decisions were influenced by the DayZ community forums."

To start with gamers will be treated to one map, called Colorado, but other environments such as New York and Paris will be added further down the line. A closed beta is in the works, and should launch soon.
