Nintendo has announced their latest financial results for the nine month period ending December 2015. The Kyoto-based company revealed that the previous year's ¥59,515 million ($493M /£341M/€451M) has dropped to ¥40,558 million ($336M/£233M/€307M), which represents at 32% year-on-year decline for the same period.

Despite the fall in profit the company remains in the black, and it's fair to say that the dip was not unexpected, especially with the reveal of the company's next console (currently under the name NX) expected later this year.

In the meantime Nintendo are still reliant on sales from their current home console, the Wii U, and the handheld 3DS. The 3DS (including the New 3DS and New 3DS XL) sold 5.88 million units, and the Wii U shifted 3.06 million units during the same period.

In terms of software, the biggest performer on 3DS was Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, which accounted for 2.93 million sales, but the company also reported "steady" sales for the likes of Super Smash Bros. and Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.

For the Wii U the best selling game was Splatoon (with just over 4 million copies sold) followed by Super Mario Maker (3.34 million copies sold). Older titles like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 also did well for the company.

Finally, Amiibo continues to be a profitable revenue stream for Nintendo, with a whopping 20.5 million figurines sold, and more that 21.5 million cards also making their way into the hands of players.

Legacy titles continue to do the business for Nintendo, but it was a new IP in the form of Splatoon that made the biggest splash on Wii U.
