A new year has begun and Sony (after Microsoft announced their own financial results) has published their results for the last quarter of fiscal 2016, which ended last December 31.

The Japanese giant has shipped 8.4 million PlayStation 4 units between 1 October and 31 December 2015, meaning total sales for the console now exceed 36 million. For the entire fiscal year, which ends March 31, the company aims to have shifted 17.5 million PS4 consoles.

The Game & Network division recorded very interesting growth compared to the same period of 2014, mainly thanks to the huge success of the new console, which continues to be very popular among players around the world.

Hardware and software sales are up 10.5% annually, with a revenue of 587.1 billion yen ($4.89 billion USD). Most important is the growth in PS4's hardware and software, as it has compensated for the inevitable decline in PlayStation 3 related sales.

To mark the publication of this information, Sony took the opportunity to once again remind us of the birth of a new company, Sony Interactive Entertainment, which merges Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment International, and which will come into operation on April 1.
