While the prospect of playing PlayStation 2 games is definitely an exciting one for longtime PlayStation fans, the price of taking a trip down memory lane has been deemed too high by some. As there's no option to play PS2 discs on the PS4, players can only download games at relatively high prices, with the initial line up featuring games costing between $10-$15.
Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida defended the pricing during a recent PlayStation Nation Podcast. He explained that the price reflected the cost of the emulation technology and the implementation of PS4 features like Trophies and Share functionality, as well as licensing and quality assurance.
"We are also able to add Trophies; some people really care about Trophies," Yoshida said. "So we can provide that. And it takes some time for our staff and QA and licensing and everything to bring back these games. So it takes us time and cost. So we felt that we should charge."
PS2 games currently available on PS4 include Dark Cloud, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Rogue Galaxy, The Mark of Kri, Twisted Metal: Black and War of the Monsters and Twisted Metal: Black.
