2015 was a particularly troublesome year for Rovio. Although their games continue to rack up big numbers, the company has had to navigate some tricky waters in recent times. Last August, in fact, Rovio was forced to cut more than 260 jobs and just a few months later, in October, they let go a further 200 employees, cutting more than 30% of the workforce.
With such an unstable situation at the company, recently elected Rovio CEO Pekka Rantala (who took the role after co-founder Mikael Hed left last August) has stepped down. His place will be taken by chief legal officer Kati Levoranta, who will now act as president and CEO of the Finnish studio.
Regarding his departure, outgoing boss Rantala simply said: "I feel now the time is right for me to step aside and move on to new challenges."
Rantala decided to leave his role despite financial conditions at the company improving, paving the way for the Angry Birds movie (coming in 2016), and the release of new games. Regarding that, new CEO Levoranta said: "We are now positioned to make the most of the release of The Angry Birds Movie in May and some exciting developments in the games and consumer products portfolios throughout 2016."
