Here's another interview direct from Namco Bandai. This time it's with Dragon Ball Z: Budokai HD Collection's associate producer Mikio Nagura.
On the concept of DBZ Budokai HD:
The concept of Dragon Ball Budokai HD Collection is based on our wish to share with all generations of gamers and Dragon Ball fans the most successful PS2 DBZ games adapted on actual consoles.
Why did you choose Dragon Ball Z Budokai 1 & 3?
Why did we choose Dragon Ball Budokaï Z 1 and 3? We simply read on the Internet all the comments we could from DBZ fan communities and forums in general. Both Budokaï 1 and 3 received very positive feedback as the most popular episodes. This encouraged us to get back to work to release them in HD for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
On Budokai 1:
Budokai 1 is a 2002 Playstation 2 game. It was the very first appearance of Dragon Ball on PS2 with brand new graphics. The idea was to reconstitute all the story of anime with a graphic style in 3D Polygonal.
And Budokai 3:
Budokai 3 is the latest episode released in 2004 on PS2. In this iteration, we focused on a 2D combat experience. And it's also the episode with the most complete cast of characters, levels and special techniques. It was the outcome of the Budokai series. The gameplay of this 3rd episode is quite representative of the series, so it was key for us to offer it to the latest Dragon Ball fans.
What are the benefits of HD?
What are the benefits of HD ? Obviously, the first thing is the improved graphical aspect since everything has been reworked in HD. Especially, the effects of lights and blurred were optimized, the character animations, special combos and everything related to fighting moves. We really improved its overall visual aspect while boosting the combat experience.
What is the storyline of Budokai HD?
Regarding the storyline of Budokai, the very first episode covers the arrival of Sayans on earth to the end of the Cell Saga. Likewise, Budokai 3 covers from the beginning of the Sayans Saga to the end of the Cell Saga, but this time we also included Dragon Ball GT characters as well as those from the original movies. Ultimately, both Budokai 1 and 3 cover the complete Dragon Ball Z story with the biggest cast of characters ever seen in a Dragon Ball game.
What does Japan Expo represent for you?
Initially, we didn't plan to come to Japan Expo with playable demos of Dragon Ball Budokai HD Collection. But we had a lot of requests, and we decided to address them bringing some playable version and see people reactions. I'm very happy to attend Japan Expo to witness that, to see gamers happy to play a game release many years ago and be able to rediscover it optimized for HD consoles. We are excited to see the result. It encourages us and we hope to unveil more very soon. So stay tuned for the release of the game very soon. Thank you!
