Over the last few years virtual reality, or VR, has become one of the hottest topics in both the video game and technology industries. EA, however, has not yet shown much interest.
According to chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen this is a conscious decision on EA's part. Much like the case for Nintendo's Wii U and Sony's PS Vita, the earning potential from virtual reality games is simply not high enough yet, and thus EA will wait before venturing into the realm of VR.
"We don't make games anymore for the Wii or the Wii U because the market is not big enough," Jorgensen explained. "The PS Vita - we don't make games for that anymore because the market is too small. There's some challenges still for VR and I think the biggest challenge is just the size of the market."
They also believe that they're not the only company that shares this view, and that other industries will most likely will make use of VR on a bigger scale before it's fully embraced by the video game industry.
"The next one to three years, it's probably going to take some time to build up a sizable market place and you might see alternative uses for virtual reality first before it becomes gaming," Jorgensen concluded.
Thanks, Games Industry.
