Sony has published a straightforward reply to the claims that PS4 was used to communications in the planning of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.
The main bulk of the "accusations" originated from Belgium's minister of Security and Home Affairs Jan Jambon, who said that monitoring communications on PS4 is more difficult than on WhatsApp and other social media channels. After that many UK news sites grabbed the quotes and made it sounds as if ISIS terrorists used Sony PlayStation 4 to plot the Paris massacre.
Sony responded to Eurogamer with the following statement:
"PlayStation 4 allows for communication amongst friends and fellow gamers and, in common with all modern connected devices, this has the potential to be abused. However, we take our responsibilities to protect our users extremely seriously and we urge our users and partners to report activities that may be offensive, suspicious or illegal. When we identify or are notified of such conduct, we are committed to taking appropriate actions in conjunction with the appropriate authorities and will continue to do so."
It is sometimes difficult to tell why certain things are said in the aftermaths of attacks such as these, but perhaps there is a wish for Sony to provide the intelligence community with more access to communications on PS4 regardless of whether it was actually used in the planning of the attacks?
