During the financial quarter that ended on September 30, Sony enjoyed strong sales for both PlayStation 4 and PS4 software. Elsewhere PS3 software sales took a tumble, but given the continuing migration onto current-gen platforms, that's hardly a surprise.

4 million PS4 units were sold during the financial quarter, which represented a 4.8% increase in hardware sales (and bringing the total up to 29 million units shipped so far, with the company expecting 17.5 million to ship by the end of the year). However, the biggest increase came in terms of network sales (PS Store and the Sony Entertainment Network), which jumped up an incredible 56.8%.

The company reported that fluctuating currencies in other countries has cut into their profits, but the platform holder still reported a year-on-year increase in sales and operating revenue just shy of 20%. Not too shabby.

Overall the company is in a better place this year, with an operating income of ¥88 billion, a turnaround after the ¥85.6 billion loss of the year before.
