Ultra HD is already out there offering increased resolution, and Virtual Reality is on its way. Is the PlayStation 4 really fit for the next era of gaming? Well, Sony certainly feels that they've got some room for manoeuvre.
In a recent interview Masayasu Ito, Senior Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment, told 4gamer that it wasn't possible with Cell and PS3 to upgrade the hardware (except for the HDD), but with the adopted x86 architecture it is now possible to enhance the performance of PS4.
"There is a potential", Ito said. "It is easy to achieve a flexible performance enhancements. Although it is possible, for example, to provide variations such a standard performance version of PS4 and a high-performance version of PS4. It is a idea that can be considered."
So while it's not likely that Sony are ready to launch a new version of PlayStation 4, thanks to its architecture, it would be possible to make a more capable version of the console. Perhaps Sony are considering something that would allow for Ultra HD and that works better with PlayStation VR, where a high frame-rate is necessary for good performance.
