Microsoft has confirmed that it has bought physics engine Havok from Intel. The popular dev tool has been used in the creation of over 600 games (from The Elder Scrolls to Call of Duty via Halo and Uncharted), and its new owners says that they'll continue to license it out to creators.

"We will continue to work with developers to create great gaming experiences, and continue to license Havok's development tools to partners," the company announced. "Havok is a fantastic addition to Microsoft's existing tools and platform components for developers. [And] we will continue to innovate for the benefit of development partners. Part of this innovation will include building the most complete cloud service, which we've just started to show through games like Crackdown 3."

It's not yet clear how much Microsoft spent when sealing the deal, or whether they'll start being more selective about who they license it to, so we'll just have to wait and see how this one plays out.
