Very little is known about Nintendo's next console, condenamed NX. The Wii U is struggling with poor sales compared to PlayStation 4 in particular as well as Xbox One, leading many to believe the next console will be radically different.

At the same time the dual screen functionality of the Wii U and its GamePad controller has a lot of potential, and now a newly discovered controller patent registered by Nintendo is raising eyebrows across the internet.

It is unclear whether this controller concept is meant for Wii U or NX. Regardless it displays a controller similar to the GamePad, only with fewer buttons on the righthand side, and the addition of scroll buttons on each sholders. Those buttons will seemingly make it easier to scroll through menus or inventory systems on screen, and appear similar to traditional mouse wheels.

The patent was filed all the way back in February, but has only just now appeared online thanks to the good folks over at the NeoGAF forums. For now we'll have to wait and see if more information is released, but based on the picture with hands included, it appears significantly smaller than the original GamePad. Of course, far from every patent filed ever makes it as far as an actual consumer product, but nevertheless it is interesting to see what Nintendo are toying with.
