It was first known as Project Morpheus, when it was just that, a project, a prototype. Then, earlier this year, Sony started calling it just Morpheus, as the peripheral reached its final design, specs and official launch date. And now, starting today, the working product name drops in favor of the final branding: the PS4 virtual reality headset is officially called PlayStation VR.

This is the official statement released from Tokyo Game Show:

"The name PlayStation VR not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience," said Masayasu Ito, EVP, Division president of PS Product Business and VP, Software Design Division.

"We will continue to refine the hardware from various aspects, while working alongside 3rd party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, in order to bring content that deliver exciting experiences only made possible with VR."

Gamers attending to the Japanese event starting Thursday 17th (business) and Saturday 19th (public) will be able to to try several games in development for the system, such as demos of Final Fantasy XIV Online, Danganronpa VR, Summer Lesson, Hatsune Miku: VR Tech Demo, Dynasty Warriors 8: VR Demo, RIGS: Machine Combat League, The Playroom VR, Kitchen and Joysound VR.

More details on specific launch plans are expected in the following weeks/months, so both Paris Games Week and PlayStation Experience look likely for final date and price for PlayStation VR.
