The Swedish developer DICE has just updated the official website for the upcoming Mirror's Edge Catalyst with a lot of information about movements in the game. One of the new features is the Shift move, which is described like this by Lead Gameplay Designer Rickard Antroia:
"The origin of Shift is that we wanted to find something that lets you gain speed faster. Shift lets you move sideways in any direction, and also backwards. Say you get too close to a threat or just want to back up and get a clearer view of your surroundings, Shift will take care of that."
The Shift move can also be used like drifting in racing games to cut corners in high speed. DICE has made sure you won't die by doing this, and Antroia says:
"One extra perk of using Shift like this is that you can't fall off of ledges while doing it. This means you can use this technique on dodgy terrain and on small catwalks without railings."
Mirror's Edge Catalyst will be released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 25th next year.
