Apple are hosting a major press event in San Francisco this week, and they are believed to announce a new incarnation of iPhone 6, but also an new Apple TV. According to New York Times, it will focus on games and will be poised as a challenger to current video game consoles.

Jan Dawson, chief analyst at the technology research firm Jackdaw Research, says:

"I think Apple's going to create a big new category in gaming, one that others have tried and failed to create before. What the Apple TV has the potential to do is to bring casual gaming to the living room and make it a much more social activity."

The Apple console is rumored to have a starting price around $150, which of course is very competitive compared to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - but still way more expensive than Apple TV. The audience is believed to be casual players who thinks video games in general just is to complicated. This segment is the very same that numerous Android consoles have tried to appeal to without much success, remains to be seen if Apple will find more success.
