Microsoft last night revealed details of the new Windows Phone operating system.
The new mobile OS is will have much in common with Microsoft's Windows 8; the implications of this being increased connectivity between devices around the home. The Metro-style tile system of the past remains intact, and the interface will remain consistent across the devices that employ it.
Users will be able to jump straight into Windows 8 on their new mobile devices, but those currently using Windows 7.5 will have to walk a different path. An update (7.8) will be available that will allow cosmetic changes to be made, bringing the design inline with Windows 8.
The first smart phones to be Windows 8 ready will come from HTC, Nokia and Samsung. The handsets will also be the first with multi-core CPUs, and screen resolution will rise (up to 1280×768). It will support MicroSD cards and feature Internet Explorer 10.
These details follow hot of the heels of Mircrosoft revealing Surface, their answer to the iPad.
At E3 this year Microsoft unveiled SmartGlass technology. Using Windows 8 ready devices, gamers will be able to interact with all the music and films on their consoles. The revitalised Windows Phone mobile OS and the announcement of Surface fit in nicely with the company's planned infiltration of the living room.
