According to a recent survey, the average gamer spends £334 every year on games, which equates to 16 titles per player.

The survey, conducted by ShopTo.net over the weekend, showed a shift toward mobile gaming, with 35% of those surveyed preferring their mobile device to their console.

"Gamers are changing their gaming device of choice with more getting their casual gaming fix from Android and iOS devices," said Igor Cipolletta, founder and CEO of ShopTo. "Interestingly, we are seeing game sales on the Nintendo consoles losing out as the casual games market on portable devices continues to grow."

Almost two-thirds of those questioned owned a Nintendo Wii, but only 4% of those had purchased a game for the console in the last 12 months. The survey also revealed that the average gamer uses a variety of different platforms to satisfy their gaming needs. Over 80% of those asked owned a PC, a smart phone and 2 games consoles.

Cipolletta added: "The fact is consumers have more gaming devices than ever before, with thousands of games being published every week and this, coupled with the lack of new hardware from Sony or Microsoft, is seeing consumers move to mobile devices as their platform of choice."

"We believe this trend will reverse when the next generation of consoles are released beginning with the Wii U this Christmas."
