Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida has commented on the recently surfaced SNES PlayStation, which was apparently found in a box of junk that was supposed to be thrown out when the company that had been inadvertently storing it went bankrupt.

Yoshida told Engadget that when he joined Ken Kutaragi's dev team in 1993 "there was a system called 'Play Station' that had both Super Nintendo cartridge support and some disc game support."

The Sony boss even added that he had "played some games" on the console, though he didn't say what.

Yoshida joined Sony in 1986, five years before Kutaragi unveiled and instantly canned the SNES PlayStation.

Despite commenting on the ancient hardware, Yoshida still didn't want to officially confirm the console as being a genuine device:

"Somehow, I think it's more fun to keep it kind of a mystery," he teased.
