The PlayStation 4's first-party line-up might not be as busy as it could be, but Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida believes that the platform holder is making "creative and charming" games that compliment the more conservative titles coming from third-party publishers this year and beyond.
"When you just look at the big triple-A blockbuster titles, yes, we don't have many, but we are actually planning about ten games to release this year from now till the end of December," Yoshida-san told Gamereactor when we talked to him at E3.
"And many games are very, very creative and charming, games like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture or The Tomorrow Children or Until Dawn. Many, many interesting titles that are very different from any other big titles.
"So I think we are offering great variety of experiences for people who have PS4, and as you saw in the conference there are lots of big third-party titles coming out this Christmas. Just to name a few, like Destiny and Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed and Star Wars Battlefield [a Freudian slip no doubt]. We didn't have in the conference, but you know Metal Gear Solid V is coming, and Fallout 4 looks insane. So there are no shortage of big titles that you can play and enjoy on PS4, and in many cases PS4 is the best place to play these third-party titles.
"So I think our offer is very good complimentary to these big titles, and we have Uncharted Collection as well, we know many people who own PS4 didn't used to own PS3, and in preparation for Uncharted 4 it's a great way to re-experience the Uncharted saga on PS4 with improved graphics and a better framerate. So I think we are providing something for PS4 users."
When asked if he thought that providing variety and complimenting third-party offerings was the company's responsibility in their capacity as first-party publisher, Yoshida-san said:
"We have a culture to create games from ground up, support creatives. We are very excited to work on new IPs, and our teams who come up with some very innovative new concepts, like you saw like Media Molecule's Dreams, it's a completely new creation platform from Media Molecule.
"So it turns out that we find our titles to be complimentary to other publishers who tend to make more conventional-style games," he continued, explaining that they like to "look at what we have from first-party's title line-up to find the perfect third-party titles to team up with when you talk about some exclusivity contents or promotional tie-up, or something like that.
"We have first-party titles in development for this year, next year, and the year after, and it's the company's business side job to look at the line-up and try to create the great portfolio of titles on PlayStation."
The full interview with Shuhei Yoshida will be published on Gamereactor tomorrow, so tune in then for more on The Last Guardian, that E3 conference, PS Vita, and much more.
