Here's what we know about Xbox One backward compatibility

We've tried it, and this is what we discovered.

Backwards compatibility between Xbox One and Xbox 360 is a big deal for Microsoft, with the feature announced to huge cheers during the company's E3 press conference this week.

We have now seen that feature up and running, and seeing as it's currently only available to a minority of Xbox Live members, we can clear up a few things for you.

First of all: So far, Microsoft has only 22 Xbox 360 games that are currently compatible and able to run on Xbox One. By autumn, however, there should be more than a hundred, and then beyond that, considerably more.

Of course, you have to be logged in with your gamertag on Xbox Live. Digital games you have purchased already will be available under the "My Games" tab. These can be installed directly from the cloud.

We saw Perfect Dark and Zuma in action. The games take a respective 870 MB or 612 MB of disk space on the Xbox One and are installed within a few minutes (obviously, that's connection dependent).

With the "installation" of the virtual console on Xbox One, it takes several minutes (three for us) for the install and registration of the relevant Xbox 360 information. We ran Zuma after installation and it started like any other game on Xbox One.

The console logs in as an Xbox 360 to Xbox Live, and you can even use your old cloud storage game saves. Both Perfect Dark and Zuma ran smoothly and without problems. Though when we selected the option to go back to Xbox Live Arcade from Zuma's main menu, the game crashed (because that location simply doesn't exist).

The disc-based Perfect Dark Zero, however, doesn't work. Not yet at least. The installation from the disc didn't work, and produced an error that said that the game could not be installed (although it is on the list of 22 games).

Bottom line, the emulation of the Xbox 360 games on Xbox One runs surprisingly smoothly and without any problems, although not all of the games on the list of 22 are working just yet.
