If you want to buy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for just $39 via retailer Green Man Gaming, you might get into trouble with that code at some point. The codes they sell come from an "unknown source", developer CD Projekt Red told GameSpot.

They claim none of the revenue will end up with the Polish developer's sales portal GOG.com or CD Projekt Red directly. Their own business development manager Rafał Jaki writes on their official forum, that fans of the company should not buy The Witcher 3 from Green Man Gaming. "I would kindly ask our fans no to buy via GMG at this time. We had not sold them keys and don't know the origin of them."

Green Man Gaming on the other hand (also via GameSpot, claim the codes are indeed legitimate.

"Following a six-month dialogue with [CD Projekt RED] about the launch of The Witcher 3, we were disappointed that despite the offer of significant cash advances, and other opportunities to officially work together, (we even offered to fly to Poland to discuss in detail how we could and wanted to support this launch), CDPR chose not to engage with a number of significant, reputable, and successful retailers, including ourselves, as they instead focused on supporting their own platform GOG." said Green Man Gaming's Paul Sulyok.

"We, like millions of customers, are huge fans of The Witcher series, and have been eager for the launch of this amazing title. We believe that CDPR's desire to support their own platform by working with retail outlets that would not conflict with their own is greater than that of meeting the demands of their audience, therefore we made the decision to indirectly secure the product and deliver it to our customers."

Of course, the $39 price point still races questions on where these codes have been acquired, but according to Sulyok they come from CDPR approved retailers and third parties.

Regardless, of who you choose to believe you may want to think twice about buying this game from Green Man Gaming just as a precaution. CD Projekt may feel they are in their right to block these codes should they learn the source. Even if such a move would pretty much go against all the things GOG.com stands for...
