Valve has introduced a new feature to Steam whereby developers will now have the power to ban players using their own anti-cheat systems. The new system means that bans will now be dictated by the game's creators, and not by Valve (although they will still push the button that hands out the punishment).

From here on in this should free up Valve's support team to look at other areas, at the same time as giving developers more control over their communities. Exactly what this means for gamers who play on the edge of acceptability remains to be seen, and with devs getting more authority there's bound to be some disagreements down the line. At the very least it'll be interesting to see how this one plays out. More details on how the new system will work can be found here.
