Last week's hints at a VR Half-Life certainly caused a stir among fans who've long been waiting on Valve to announce the third full game in the sci-fi shooter series.
Valve knocked those reports on the head, however, the studio has confirmed that they're not ruling out the possibility of making a game in the Half-Life universe using their new VR headset, Vive.
"We're not saying, ‘no' but we don't know what the right thing is [yet]," programmer Jeep Barnett told Kotaku. "Our most precious resource is time, and we don't have enough time for people to do everything. Would we like to make all of our franchises in VR? Absolutely. But we don't have enough time or people. So we have to figure out what's the best fit, what plays to the strengths of VR."
The studio have of course been experimenting with their new VR platform, and of course Half-Life is a good fit for that kind of experimentation. That doesn't mean a game is on the way though.
"So yeah, we'll grab some headcrabs, we'll grab the machine guns from Half-Life, the rocket launcher - all those different fun things - and see how they play in VR," Barnett added. "But right now, it's a tool for exploring the different kind of game designs we want to do. Is Half-Life a good fit? Is Left 4 Dead a good fit? Is a new franchise a good fit? I don't know yet. We're really trying to cover the broad spectrum of what we could do, and then we'll start focusing on spearheading that."
So not a no, and not a yes either. Valve are obviously keeping their cards close to their collective chest for the time being, so don't expect a Half-Life themed announcement from the company any time soon.
