Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President, Shuhei Yoshida, had some strong words about the annualized franchises. During a panel at the 2015 DICE Summit, Yoshida spoke about the current state of the industry, and he noted that he "hates" franchise annualisation.
Talking about his experience at Sony, he said that in the early days of PlayStation, sequels were often seen as a wasted expense that rarely saw returns on the same level as the originals.
According to Yoshida, marketing executives don't understand the development process, which leads them to draw comparisons to franchises such as Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed. Both see annual releases each year and tend to make profit with few exceptions.
In other words, the executive from Sony doesn't believe that this annual practise could be profitable, and he wishes they didn't happen.
What's your opinion about that? Are you agree with Yoshida? Tell us in the comments below.
