The University of Pikeville in Kentucky will follow Chicago's Robert Morris University in offering scholarships to pro players of League of Legends, with up to twenty potential places on offer.
"It will be a regime a lot like athletics," media director Bruce Parsons said. "They'll have to have a certain GPA. We'll look at them like student athletes. There will be practice time and video time when they have to study other teams for upcoming competitions."
Whether this is a longterm initiative that'll spread to more educational institutions, or just an opportunistic college trying to get some exposure, remains unclear. At the very least it shows the growing prominence of eSports, and their gradual acceptance into the wider public domain.
