Mortal Kombat X is getting its own comic, and the printed version of the first issue will be published next week by DC Comics. The digital comic should be out any day now, although it's not currently available from Google Play.

IGN published an interview with the comic's writer, Shawn Kittelsen, who also worked as an creative executive on Injustice: Gods Among Us. He may have moved on, but was later contacted to write a comic book series about the events leading up to MKX. According to Kittelsen, this was a good opportunity to introduce some new characters to the series:

"There are 25 years between MK 2011 and MKX, so we're somewhere in the middle of that timeline. This allows us to meet some of the newer characters while they're still in their formative years, figuring out who they are and why they fight, as well as check in on the classic characters."

The series kicks off by introducing the long-running fan favourite Scorpion and Kenshi. Later in the series readers also get to meet Cassie Cage and discover the origins of Kotal Kahn. There will be lots of new information, but not every character in the comics is going to make it into the game:

"I will say this: Just because you see a character in the comic, that doesn't guarantee you'll see them in the game. Will Takeda survive to see adulthood in the game? You'll have to read the comic - and pay attention to Ed Boon's Twitter account - to find out."</i>

It looks like the comic might be a good way to immerse yourself in the MKX universe before the game's release in April.
