NPD have released the top selling games and hardware numbers for January's US market. Overall, the market was down 13 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2009, with hardware falling 21 per cent. The top seller of the month was Nintendo's juggernaut New Super Mario Bros. Wii, with new release Mass Effect 2 coming in second. The Xbox 360 versions of Darksiders and Army of Two: The 40th Day also managed top ten positions, while most of the list was filled by the heavy hitters of the holiday season. A couple of notable absentees are Bayonetta and Dark Void, but overall the games in the top ten sold fairly well so perhaps it's not that surprising.
On the hardware front only Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 managed better numbers in 2010 compared to 2009. It would seem that Playstation 2 is finally on its last legs, while even with a substantial decrease compared to 2009, Nintendo are still the big winners. The PSP numbers must also be a big disappointment for Sony.
