If you're not interested in heading out into space for an adventure unless you're allowed to take your cat along for the ride, then rejoice, as pets are heading to Star Citizen.

The scif-fi starship simulator has just smashed through the $65 million mark, and as part of a previous stretch goal, pets are set to be included in the game.

"We have repair bots, we have fish, but we haven't implemented a traditional pet system in Star Citizen yet," creator Chris Roberts said in a letter.

"At $64 million, that changes. From Jones the Cat in Alien to the Battlestar Galactica's Daggit, pets have a place on board starship and we want to give you that option in Star Citizen. Expect traditional terrestrial options, plus anything exotic we can dream up in the Star Citizen universe!"

Obviously they weren't expecting to push through the $64 million mark and hit $65 million so quickly, because nothing's set in stone for the next stretch goal as yet.

More details are promised further down the line, however, Roberts did say this: "For those looking ahead to $65 million, we have a major feature we're investigating as an option. Suffice it to say, we've heard a lot of your feedback about modular ships and we want to expand our plan for how to do them."

Thanks to the huge support the game has received from its crowd funding campaign, there's no pressure to release the game before it's ready. As such Star Citizen is expected to hit PC platforms sometime in 2016.
