The PlayStation 4 is going from strength to strength and sold a whopping 3.3 million units in the latest quarter (up from 2.7 million in the previous quarter) putting Sony's new-gen console at 13.5 million units to date. Head and shoulders above the competition (we only have Microsoft's number of 5 million shipped units from April to go on, while Wii U with a year's lead on PS4 weighs in at 7.29 million). In fact this is their strongest quarter to date outside of the launch last year.
Sony home consoles (PS3 & PS4) sold 4.1 million units while handhelds (PSP & PS Vita) accounted for 700,000 sales. Overall, though Sony went from an operating income of ¥13.9 billion to a loss of ¥85.6 billion with the Mobile Communications division bleeding profusely (operating loss of ¥172 billion). Outside of that division most parts of Sony seem to be doing alright. The Games division registered an operating profit of ¥21.8 billion on sales of ¥309.5 billion (up 83.2% compared to the same period last year).
