Nintendo has released a report detailing their results for this financial year's first quarter.

The good news is that, thanks to Mario Kart 8, Nintendo has improved Wii U's sales, selling 510,000 units - 200,000 more than in the last financial quarter - and a total of 2.82 million copies of Mario Kart 8. Thus it can be considered one of the best-selling games on the console.

3DS is also doing better, selling 820,000 units between April and June, compared to the last quarter's 590,000 3DS units. In total, Wii U and 3DS have sold 6.68 million and 44.14 million total units to date, respectively.

On the other hand, even if Nintendo had a good performance in the last financial quarter, the Kyoto-based company still isn't making profit. According to the report, Nintendo recorded an operating loss of 9.4 billion yen in this quarter - around $92 million. The cause of these low numbers is attributable to Wii U's low performance, and to a lack of hit titles for the platform.

Nintendo is now hoping that upcoming games - such as the new Smash Bros. for 3DS, Smash Bros. for Wii U, Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 - can change the fortunes of the company and continue the upward trend noted in these latest financial results.
