Jaguar shows off their vision for future driving

And it'll be familiar to anyone who enjoys racing games.

A virtual windscreen that shows driving lines and hazard projection is in development over at Jaguar. The heads-up display will potentially show drivers the sorts of information that gamers have long been used to in titles such as Forza Motorsport 5 and Gran Turismo 6.

Research and tech director Dr Wolfgang Epple said: "We are working on research projects that will give the driver better information to enhance the driving experience. By presenting the highest quality imagery possible, a driver need only look at a display once. Showing virtual images that allow the driver to accurately judge speed and distance will enable better decision-making and offer real benefits for every-day driving on the road, or the track."

Jaguar are also working with gesture control technology that'll allow drivers to keep their eyes on the road, using motion-tracking tech inspired by devices like smartphones and console peripherals (such as Kinect and the PS Camera).

"Gesture control has already become an accepted form of controlling anything from TV sets to games consoles. The next logical step is to control selected in-car features. We have identified which functions still need to be controlled by physical buttons and which could be controlled by gesture and carefully calibrated motion sensors. The system is currently being tested on a number of features including sunblinds, rear wipers and satellite navigation maps. It has the potential to be on sale within the next few years," Dr Epple concluded.

The car manufacturer details the concept in this post on their website. Might our future car journeys look like our current driving games? We're looking forward to finding out.
