*Update* Nintendo UK has confirmed the story.

"Whilst Gamescom is a fantastic show, we have taken the decision not to attend this year's event. We are planning a number of sampling events throughout Germany in which our fans will have the opportunity to play upcoming Nintendo 3DS, Wii and Wii U titles. Further details will be announced soon."

Original Story

Nintendo will not be appearing at Gamescom this year, it'd been reported, instead concentrating on specialist events leading up to the launch of Wii U.

The news came by way of German retail magazine Gamesmarkt, who've quoted a local Nintendo representative who stated that the company would skip the German trade fair in favour of its own special events. It'll still be attending E3.

A translation of the quote in the original story reads:

"Although Gamescom is one of the most important fairs for us, we have decided this year not to participate in it. Instead, we are planning our post-E3 activities for Wii U as well as the latest title for Nintendo 3DS and Wii.

"We're also planning for later this year - as part of the pan-European marketing, public relations and event activities - a series of events that our fans will have the opportunity to try out the latest titles. More information is to come."

While rumours of Sony and Microsoft's next-gen showings still dog E3, Nintendo is certain to show off its new console in L.A.

We've contacted Nintendo UK and have been told an official statement should be with us shortly. More news as we get it.
