If the anonymous sources quoted/mentioned below are to be believed, it seems that Ryse 2 has been cancelled, and that developer Crytek may be in trouble.
According to a variety of different sources collected together by Kotaku, the Crysis devs are losing money and staff, with employees going unpaid and various projects getting canned, including, most notably, the planning for the sequel to the Xbox One launch title, Ryse: Son of Rome.
Current staff, hoping to throw some light on the situation, now seem to be speaking out on the issue, revealing the damaging culture at the studio and how it has caused an estimated 100 people to leave the company in recent months.
"Trying to confine the problem rather than tackling it is not the way to go about this anymore; it's too big now," one current Crytek employee said. "Honest communication, inclusion, and a work environment based on trust could have gone a long way, and may have stopped people from leaving."
Another told the site: "Suddenly the direction everyone saw us go in was not that clear anymore. It was obvious that we didn't have any big time publishers at our back to finance our development... A lot of people started to get frustrated then (and started to look for other work), as the strategy was not clear to the employees."
Despite some employees reportedly getting paid less or not at all, the report claims that some people at the studio continue to enjoy a lavish lifestyle of fast cars and first class travel.
"There was no expense spared on anything," one employee said, while another added: "even when the financial troubles started, people were still flying between studios regularly, and while salaries didn't get paid, the travels were still authorized."
According to the report the studio are expecting an injection of funding in the near future, but whether that's true and/or has arrived, remains unclear.
It's also suggested that staff have been told not to discuss the situation with the press (a directive that looks to have been largely ignored). Crytek denied the allegations at first, but of late there's been little in the way of official comment from the studio. We'll let you know more when the picture clarifies.
