Apple announced the new iPad at their press conference last night. During the announcement an expectant audience were told that the newest addition to the Apple family will be "redefining the category".

As predicted the new tablet has a retina display and will come with a 9.7 inch screen (the same size as current iPad screens). However, the new unit will be 9.4mm thick (iPad 2 was 8.8mm).

Yesterday we reported that Apple are going to power the device with a refined A5 processor, dubbed the A5X, which remains the case. The third generation of iPad will also support quad-core graphics. The display will come with 264ppi in sharpness, allowing for 2048 x 1536 pixels.

There will be full HD recording, a 5MP iSight camera with auto-face detection. Another new feature will be auto-dictation. Battery life remains at about 10 hours. It will ship in black and white.

Apple has confirmed that the new iPad will ship on March 16. Pricing seems straightforward: The 16GB version at £399, 32GB at £479 and the 64GB unit will cost a cool £559. The iPad 2 will also take a price-cut, going down to £329.
