Last summer Valve said that they had every intention of supporting cross-play for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which would have allowed PS3 owners to pit their wits against PC and Mac gamers. It has now been revealed that Valve has abandoned this plan, pointing to the constant need for updates as the central reason.

Speaking to Joystiq, Valve's Chet Faliszek revealed that: "The beta has proved we want to update not just the beta, but the game itself post-launch frequently on the PC. To do that we need to separate the platforms so one doesn't hamstring the other. So for that, we have removed the idea of cross-platform play -- essentially make all platforms stronger by not mixing them."

If you want in on the Counter-Strike beta, you need to apply by filling in this survey. Though you'll need to hurry, access is extremely limited.
