It looks like the Double Fine Adventure is going to be one well-funded expedition. Here's an update for anyone who has been keeping an eye on events over at Double Fine in recent weeks.
Renowned developer Tim Schafer has been attracting publicity after setting up a ‘crowd funding' initiative on Kickstarter. Double Fine Adventure originally hoped for pledges around the $400,000 mark, but the project attracted some serious investment, and the current total of donations received stands at $2,035,726.
With over 60,000 backers and a further three weeks to attract extra investment, Schafer and Double Fine look like they've opened up a whole new revenue stream to the industry, one that before now didn't even exist. When other developers start using it we'll find out if this is a legitimate source of funding, or an anomaly based on the popularity of a cult figure like Schafer, another element that makes these events even more exciting.
