A 2026 Cannes Film Festival with a strong Spanish flavour

Thierry Frémaux has just concluded his speech with a clear reference to the difficult situation facing the traditional film industry, and specifically Spanish cinema. To paraphrase, he emphasised that this year's Official Selection features a good handful of high-quality Spanish films by various directors and of different sensibilities (Pedro Almodóvar, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Javier Calvo, and Javier Ambrossi). Despite cinema closures and falling attendance, Spanish cinema is 'very much alive'.

"There is a certain movement within Spanish cinema, which is struggling and suffering to find cinemas, to find funding and the budget to stay alive. So Pedro Almodóvar is adding to the Official Selection with his film [Amarga Navidad], which will be presented on 13 May."
